When the Dot NET universal top-level domain was initially started in 1985, together with the first domain extensions on the web, it was planned to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure entities. Given that there were no specific conditions about the usage of the top-level domain, though, .NET domains were reserved and used for various purposes and by many people.
